Masonic Education - What does this mean to you?

ree

Last night I found this paper, Masonic Education: Its Raison d'Être, by Dr. Moody Amakobe, explores the essential role of Masonic education in preserving and advancing the speculative tradition of Freemasonry. Drawing from a deep understanding of philosophical and esoteric traditions, Dr. Amakobe critiques the modern tendency to reduce Masonic education to rote ritualism, asserting that such a narrow focus neglects the profound teachings embedded in the Craft's symbols, allegories, and legends.

The author calls for a revival of Freemasonry's original purpose: fostering self-knowledge, moral virtue, and spiritual enlightenment through the study of its mysteries. Rooted in the Delphic maxim Nosce te ipsum ("Know thyself"), this education begins with introspection, cultivating an understanding of both the self and the divine. The paper emphasises the transformative potential of engaging with Masonic symbols and myths, highlighting their capacity to inspire reverence for creation and guide the Mason toward greater personal and spiritual growth.

Dr. Amakobe’s extensive academic and professional credentials lend weight to this work. A distinguished educator, Dr. Amakobe’s approach to knowledge combines rigorous inquiry with an appreciation for interdisciplinary perspectives. His engagement with both technical and philosophical domains enriches his insights, bridging ancient wisdom with contemporary approaches to learning.

Through historical context, speculative philosophy, and esoteric interpretation, the paper positions Masonic education as a vital tool for maintaining the Craft's relevance and integrity. It urges a commitment to continuous learning as a means of fulfilling Freemasonry’s ultimate aim: to enlighten and elevate its members. This work serves as a call to action for Masons to rediscover the profound truths within their traditions and embrace the transformative power of Masonic education.

Do you agree with Dr. Amakobe’s claim that modern Masonry has drifted from its esoteric roots, and how can we restore its focus on self-knowledge and spiritual growth?

How often do we deeply reflect on the symbols in our rituals, and what role does self-knowledge play in understanding their true meaning?

I'd add to this that we should encourage them not to be afraid of being 'wrong'. I think that's why many students won't speak up, either in class (or perhaps here too). For example I think I got it wrong in the Point within a Circle: An EA Perspective the first time 'round, but to your point (pun noted), it was only after digging deeper did the real meaning surface. The discussion was the important part, references to other resources and it was months later the journey led me to know that the ritual had changed and discover the original meaning of parallel lines when it started to make sense.

I'm also keen to hear how other mentors encourage this in their adepts (learned something new right here -- 'adept' as a noun).
