THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE GAVEL IN MASONRY

W Bro Petros N. Zenieris

PM of the Lodge of St George No. 1152 EC

In general terms, the gavel represents the form of authority as it has been used as such to rule and control numerous types of councils or assemblies.

From town councils to official assemblies such as courts, Parliament etc. the gavel plays a very vital role.

Accordingly, we may safely say that the gavel demands order as well as respect and obedience to the person holding it.

Passing the gavel to another person also means that the authority is also passed on to that person.

Masonic Education - What does this mean to you?

The paper emphasises the transformative potential of engaging with Masonic symbols and myths, highlighting their capacity to inspire reverence for creation and guide the Mason toward greater personal and spiritual…

I'd add to this that we should encourage them not to be afraid of being 'wrong'. I think that's why many students won't speak up, either in class (or perhaps here too). For example I think I got it wrong in the Point within a Circle: An EA Perspective the first time 'round, but to your point (pun noted), it was only after digging deeper did the real meaning surface. The discussion was the important part, references to other resources and it was months later the journey led me to know that the ritual had changed and discover the original meaning of parallel lines when it started to make sense.

I'm also keen to hear how other mentors encourage this in their adepts (learned something new right here -- 'adept' as a noun).
